Food Drop Packing List
I really love my spreadsheet… but I've not quite figured out to fully automate the Food Drop List. That being said, all the aggregation is automatic, it just needs a human eye to ensure everything is included.

Scratch that… sitting down tonight to debug the Packing List I had an epiphany on how validate that everything on the Shopping List is accounted for on the Packing List. More details later…
Creation of the Food Drop Packing List
As detailed in Shopping Lists, part of the process is to allocate meal definitions or individual food items across the Itinerary. At the end of this step the Itinerary will be able to calculate the total amount of each food item.
The Food Drop Packing List is another view of the same data, except that it is not listed by Food Item but by Packaged Item, that is, the actual item that we'll put into the bucket; in some cases they may be the same, chocolate bars for example, and in other cases the Packaged Item will be the result of one of our Homemade recipes, homemade Keto Bars for example will be packaged per bar, but the ingredients to create those bars will be listed per food item on the Shopping List.
- Shopping List: Total amounts grouped by Supplier (shop);
- Food Drop Packing List: Packets grouped by Food Drop (bucket).
This is pretty much a manual process at the moment, as I've not structured the data in a format to automate the columns.
Our Food Drop Packing List
The Food Drop Packing List process is fairly simple:
- The Food Items / Meals are aggregated on the Food Itinerary into Food Drops
- The Packing List requires the columns to be set and pointed to the appropriate Food Itinerary column
- Each Row points to an actual Food Drop, and the magic just happens…
Debugging the Packing List
Tonight's brain wave was to add a lookup to the Shopping List to validate that item's presence on the Packing List. This has made it very easy to ensure everything is accounted for.
There's still no automation in the debugging, but at least I have a visual trigger for missing items (That little 'Add' cell):
- Add all Shopping List items that are Packed Items
- Check the values that look like outliers
- Sanity check the values in relation to the number of 'Over-Nights'
- Randomly follow an aggregation from Meal Definition to Allocation to Shopping List total to Food Drop distribution.
Food Drop Packing
The actual packing of the Food Drops is a little nerve wracking, but it shouldn't be. By the time that task comes around the Itinerary will be highly polished, debugged and tested. Our AAWT packing filled 10 buckets and one package that was kept at Thredbo Post Office rather than being buried.
Next TaskFood Drop Labels
where the Menu, and then the Food Allocation, is thoroughly checked to ensure that it's allocated across the hike fully, and that we're hitting our kilojoule goals.
Our Resources
The Friends of The Heysen Trail have a huge amount of resources available, which we have obviously availed ourselves of quite liberally. I'll be updating this as required…
