The Inspiration

The initial inspiration for the piece was in two parts:

  1. To create an image of Keren & Danni that was made up of images of Keren and Danni's friends and family.
  2. To create an animation of mosaics that progressed from a single image (technically not a mosaic, I guess?) to the final image, adding small numbers of photo tiles each animation slide.

A PhotoMosaic was the obvious choice, I'd just finished the mosaics for our Bibbulmun Track walk, so had some idea of what was possible. All I had to do was to figure out how to get such a large number of photos to create the mosaic!

The basic idea for the finished image was a highly coloured Keren & Danni in front of a scenic landscape of reduced colours. In this way I was hoping to cheat with the number of photos I required, as I'd be able to use each photo twice: once in full colour and once in subdued colour.

But a PhotoMosaic also helped say what I wanted to show: the plethora of tiny facets of relationship that make the individuals who they are; and as the piece developed so did the interplay of colours: it was almost like Keren & Danni borrowed the colours of their friends and family before re-radiating that energy in bright new hues of their own.

I initially ran into some display issues at the Reception venue, where it was originally planned that the animation would run, which caused me to rethink when, and where, the mosaic was to going to play. Eventually it was decided that it would play at the Church at the end of the ceremony when the registers are signed. This of course gave some wonderful cross-fertilization opportunities with Seth Harsh who was to play a piano piece during that time.

Keren & Danni chose Bach's Air on a G String, which turned out to be the perfect compliment for the animation of the slowly developing image. In the end I couldn't watch the animation without the audio, and if I heard the audio piece I saw the animation!
