Whilst sitting at breakfast after Mass last Sunday we spotted this leaf that had somehow become speared by the tree that had born it.
It may be a little hard to discern from the photo, but the leaf is 2.5 mitres above the ground! So what are the chances of that happening? And what happened really?
Can you really imaging a free falling leaf being able to skewer itself on a branch? Maybe you should conduct an experiment: Do you still have a paper spike (like we always used for bills and the like)? Try getting one of your bills onto the spike by dropping it in the air. Any good?
If you don't have a bill spike maybe you could use a skewer?
So, if we can assume the branch didn't make the hole, what odds would it be for the branch to make a bulls-eye of the pre-existing hole in the leaf? Maybe that would make another good experiment: make a hole in a bit of paper and try and get it onto a skewer (quoit fashion) by letting it drop through the air.
Pretty unrealistic I'd think? So, how did it happen?
Maybe it was playful possums?
