I have now been using VoIP for over 14 months, and I thought that a little analysis of my call records was in order. I know I was getting better value than what Telstra could give me... but was I getting the most I could?
Currently we use:
- PennyTel as our main VSP for our long National calls and Mobile Calls as well as International Calls [costs $5/month]
- FreeCall as our main VSP for our short National calls [costs $5/month]
- MyNetPhone as our backup for Mobile Calls and National Calls [costs $0/month]
- WorldDialPoint as our backup for National Calls [costs $0/month]
It's always preferable to have a backup in place for your main VSP as VoIP is a lot more complex than the standard phone line, so many more things can go wrong to ruin your connection than can go wrong with the simple copper wire of the standard phone. Things can go wrong, and sometimes do (though not too often). You can check Oz VoIP Status for current VSP statistics.
MyNetPhone have recently created a new plan for Whirlpool users which is very good: I had not been using MyNetPhone for some time as PennyTel's rates were so much better, but their new Whirlpool users rates are very similar to PennyTel's.
On the following page you'll find my current call records analysed for the different VSP's I currently use: the spreadsheet shows the call costs for our calling patterns for each VSP.
