The Packa

The Packa does two things. First, it combines the concept of a rain jacket and a pack cover. Second and more importantly, you wear the Packa over your backpack rather than under it. This creates the airspace needed for proper ventilation. Once there is airspace, then the large ventilation zips are able to successfully make the exchange of heated and cool air.

We bought The Packa (April, 2013) after walking the Bibbulmun Track and coming to a very similar conclusion.

Garmin Oregon 300

Our kids bought us a Magellin eXplorist 100 GPS for doing the Great North Walk in 2007. It was great to have with us to locate us specifically: I used it extensively to mark positions; and it really helped on one occasion when we lost the track.

We were so impressed with the benefits that the eXplorist 100 gave that we decided to upgrade to something that you could load maps onto, and tracks back off again. We finally decided on a Garmin Oregon 300 and purchased the Australian Topographic maps in 2009.

The SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger provides a vital line of communication with friends and family when you want it, and emergency assistance when you need it. Using 100% satellite technology, SPOT works virtually anywhere in the world, even where cell phones don’t – all with the push of a button.

We purchased the SPOT before the Mittagong to Katoomba walk, which we used to test the device before taking it on longer walks.

We purchased the SteriPen Classic in time for the Mittagong to Katoomba walk.

The main reasons for the purchase was the ability to use AA rechargeable batteries, which can be recharged using the FUSE Solar Charger.
